Lancaster County Democratic Party Statement on Failed Petition Effort https://lancastercountydemocrats.org/2020/12/26/lcdp-statement-on-failed-petition-effort/ Sat, 26 Dec 2020 07:21:00 +0000 https://lancastercountydemocrats.org/?p=2557 Mayor Gaylor Baird and city council members have provided exceptional leadership and made difficult decisions during the pandemic.  Mayor Gaylor Baird, council members Bowers, Meginnis, Raybould and Ward have served with integrity. We’re glad to see the distraction from their important work come to an end.

Dr. Bob Rauner, Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln, provides data about masks “If the rest of the state had taken an approach like Lincoln’s, we would have 674 fewer dead Nebraskans today.” We watched leaders of smaller communities debate mask mandates as they send their critically-ill residents to Lincoln and Omaha hospitals. In August, the White House urged Governor Pete Ricketts to put mask mandate in place.* Please contact Governor Ricketts to request a state-wide mask mandate and encourage distribution of federal funding to help people and businesses. Consider also contacting Representative Jeff Fortenberry (202-224-3121) to support Congress’ COVID relief bill.

Lincoln was named 8th most caring city in America by Wallethub.com. We’ll get through this crisis together. Please continue masking, distancing, washing hands as directed by public health officials. If you need help, see City of Lincoln’s COVID resources page or download the MyLNK app.

We’re excited to support our Democratic candidates in the 2021 city elections and encourage you to vote early by mail.

NDP assails failed petition effort to recall Lincoln mayor and council members

The Nebraska Democratic Party cheered the failure Wednesday of the ill-fated petition drive to recall Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and four members of the Lincoln City Council over the thoughtful actions they took to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We knew it was doomed from the start,” said NDP Chair Jane Kleeb. “Those who backed the petition deserve ridicule for trying to recall officials for instituting and supporting Lincoln’s sensible mask mandate to fight the deadly pandemic. They should be ashamed.”

In particular, Chair Kleeb pointed to the dismal record of the Lancaster County Republicans and Cyndi Lamm.
